Serving Hampden and Hampshire Counties
What is Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)?
Created in 1965, SCSEP is the nation’s oldest program to help low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55+ find work. SCSEP matches eligible older adults with part-time jobs for community service organizations. Participants build skills and self-confidence, while earning a modest income. For most, their SCSEP experience leads to permanent employment.
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a community service and work-based job training program for older Americans. Authorized by the Older Americans Act, the program provides training for low-income, unemployed seniors. Participants also have access to employment assistance through American Job Centers.
Participants must be at least 55, unemployed, and have a family income of no more than 125% of the federal poverty level. Enrollment priority is given to veterans and qualified spouses, then to individuals who are over 65, have a disability, have low literacy skills or limited English proficiency, reside in a rural area, are homeless or at risk of homelessness, have low employment prospects, or have failed to find employment after using services through the American Job Center system.
The U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration’s Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) helps subsidize part-time employment and training in community service positions so that older workers can move to unsubsidized, private sector jobs prior to transitioning into the private sector.
Participants are placed at eligible training sites for which they are paid minimum wage for 20 hours per week.

Maturity comes from years of life and work experience and makes for workers who get less "rattled" when problems occur.
Commitment - older employees understand the need for punctuality, regular attendance, and conformance with work rules and company guidelines. Some employers complain that their younger workers simply want to “put their time in” and leave, unlike older workers who are more willing to stay late and get the job done because of a sense of pride in themselves.
Money - make hiring older workers a simple matter of rethinking the costs of high turnover in a more youthful workforce vs. the benefits of experience and mature standards older workers bring to the job. You simply do not have the time or resources to deal with high employee turnover. The next time you need to make a hiring decision, you should seriously consider older workers. Their contribution to your company could positively impact your bottom line for years to come.
