The Springfield Fire Department consists of 8 Engine Companies 4 Truck Companies 1 Heavy Rescue Squad, 2 Tactical EMS Units and 2 District chiefs on duty 24 hours a day seven days a week. This is done from 8 fire stations staffed by a dedicated force of 274 sworn members, supported by a staff of 58 administrative, dispatch and non-sworn personnel. The department protects a geographic area of 33.09 square miles and a population of 157,000 residence which makes Springfield the third largest city in Massachusetts and the fourth largest in New England.

On January 24th 2018 Mayor Dominic Sarno appointed Bernard J Calvi as the Fire Commissioner and the 27th person to lead the Springfield Fire Department since its inception in 1794. As Fire Commissioner, Calvi manages 274 sworn 14 civilian non uniformed members and 45 Emergency Communications personnel, with annual budget of over 28 million dollars. He is making the Springfield Fire Department a leader in the fire service by implementing several best practices, including sweeping changes to the incident command, and fire ground safety policies with the use of innovative technology.

Calvi is a lifelong Western Massachusetts resident with over 30 years of experience in Fire and emergency service. He has extensive experience in the Fire Service leadership, he is also a Paramedic, and Hazardous Materials Technician. He has attended numerous trainings on preparedness and terrorism response and serves on several local, state and regional committees.
