COMMISSIONER MIGUEL A. RIVERA

Born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, Miguel Rivera has proudly served the residents of the City of Springfield for more than 17 years. A graduate of Putnam Vocational Technical Academy, Rivera dedicated his career to protecting the community while developing the next generation of firefighters through mentorship, training, and professional development.

Rivera began his career with the Springfield Fire Department on January 12, 2009. Throughout his career, he has served in numerous specialized and leadership assignments, earning a reputation for professionalism, operational excellence, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

A highly trained technical rescue firefighter, Rivera served as a Bomb Technician with the Springfield Fire Department Bomb Squad and as a member of the department's Heavy Rescue. He is certified as a Hazardous Materials Technician and Technical Rope Rescue Technician. He has completed extensive leadership and command training, including the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Program, along with numerous executive leadership and incident command courses. As Deputy Chief of Operations, Rivera oversaw the department's daily emergency operations, staffing, training initiatives, operational readiness, and strategic planning.

Throughout his career, Rivera has remained committed to modernizing department operations, enhancing firefighter safety, expanding professional training opportunities, and strengthening community relationships. His leadership philosophy is rooted in integrity, accountability, service, and leading by example.

As Fire Commissioner, Rivera is dedicated to building upon the Springfield Fire Department's proud tradition while preparing the organization to meet the challenges of the future through innovation, collaboration, and continued investment in its firefighters.
