|   Community News

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno join with Mercy Medical Center for their annual ‘Gift of Light’ holiday tree lighting ceremony on Monday, December 12th to support the Sister Caritas Cancer Center. This year, Wicked in Pink Motorcycle Run, founded by Bob Kaine Alves, made a donation of $18,000 to support the Cancer Center and its patients and families. The funds were raised from their Wicked in Pink Motorcycle Run in October which began in Southwick and ended in Feeding Hills. The event drew more than 700 bikes to benefit the Patient Services Fund at the Cancer Center.

In 2012, Bob fought a year-long battle with head and neck cancer and received his treatment at the Sister Caritas Cancer Center.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I know first-hand the compassionate and loving care the staff at Mercy Medical Center offers from the time my late mother and father, Clara and Al “The Barber’ Sarno, spent there receiving their care.  It was an honor to attend and show my support for Mercy and Sister Mary Caritas and the Cancer Center named in her honor.  I want to give a huge shoutout to Bob Alves from Wicked in Pink.  They donated a very generous check of $18,000 to support the Cancer Center, patients and their families from their motorcycle run where over 700 bikes participated.  Let’s hear it for Wicked in Pink – Way to Go!  Also, many thanks to Sister Madeleine Joy, who created this event well over 30 years ago, Sister Caritas aka ‘The Energizer Bunny – 99 years young!,  Dr. Philip Glynn, President Deb Bitsoli, and the always supportive John and Brenda Sjoberg.”
