Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Cathy Buono, Director of Administration and Finance, CDBG, Patrick J. Sullivan, Executive Director of Parks, Building and Recreation Management and the Springfield Park Commission held a ribbon cutting at Forest Park this morning to announce renovations to the Forest Park, Barrows Park and Adams Park splash pads.
Funding for the renovations is made possible by a $340,400 grant from Community Development Block Grant funding. The grant funding allowed the City of Springfield to completely renovate the three splash pad locations. The improvements include new piping, water lines, spray activators and concrete surface. The concrete surfaces are color coated which will reduce the long-term maintenance of the splash pads.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “The City is appreciative for this Community Development Block Grant funding for this project. The CDBG program is a lifeline for urban cities in America. We accomplish many quality of life projects with these funds and the work completed at these parks is the best illustration of the importance of these funds.”
“I have long been a champion for the Community Development Block Grant program because they are so vital in helping communities and neighborhoods that need the funding most,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal. “Congratulations to Mayor Sarno and his team at the Parks Department for attaining this award that helped to fund renovations to parks across the city for all to enjoy.”
Director of Administration and Finance – CDBG Cathy Buono said, “This is great news for the patrons of Forest, Barrows and Adams Parks. The park improvements will ensure for quality active recreation areas. By local and federal government working together, we can make great things happen for our City. I would also like to extend a special thank you to our Mayor who continues to allocate funding to projects that provide great opportunities for all the residents to enjoy.”
Executive Director of Parks, Recreation and Building Management Patrick Sullivan added, “The splash pads offer great opportunities for our youth to cool off from June to September. This summer’s weather has been a great example of the importance of having splash pads throughout the City. We are very grateful for the CDBG funding as it ensures we can continue to provide quality recreational resources for our residents.”
