Today Mayor Domenic J. Sarno declared May 29-June 4 as Dr. Seuss Week in the City of Springfield, and the Cat in the Hat was on hand to accept this honor. Springfield is preparing to welcome the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, which will officially open on Saturday, June 3rd. It will be the first and only museum dedicated to the beloved children’s book author and Springfield native Theodore Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss.
Joining the Mayor and the Cat in the Hat were: Springfield Museums President Kay Simpson, Chairman of the Board John O'Brien III, Member of the Board of Trustees Noel Leary, Mayor's Chief of Staff Denise Jordan, Mayor's Director of Constituent Services Bill Baker, State Senator Eric Lesser, State Representative Angelo Puppolo, City Councilor Tim Allen, Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt, Western Mass Office of the Governor Director Mike Knapik, former State Senator Brian Lees and The Republican Executive Director Wayne Phaneuf.
The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss: The newest museum on the Quad is devoted to Springfield native Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss! The first floor features family friendly, interactive exhibits exploring Dr. Seuss’s Springfield roots and providing opportunities to experiment with new sounds and vocabulary, play rhyming games, and invent stories.
The second floor recreates Geisel’s studio and living room (with the furniture and art materials he actually used) and features never before publicly displayed art, family photographs and letters, and the original Geisel Grove sign which used to hang in Forest Park.
