Mayor Domenic J. Sarno Announces Demolition of 803-807 Liberty Street

Monday, September 26, 2016

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and City of Springfield Community Development Officials announced the demolition of the long blighted property at 803-807 Liberty Street.

“This is one more step in our efforts in neighborhood revitalization and a continuance of our fight against blight throughout the City of Springfield,” stated Mayor Domenic J. Sarno.

803-807 Liberty Street was foreclosed by the City for the non-payment of taxes in 2011. The property was abandoned and fire damaged prior to the City’s foreclosure, and the City attempted to attract a developer for the property multiple times over the years.  The City had previously had developers submit proposals to rehabilitate the building, but those developers eventually declined to move forward with the sale. The property has now deteriorated past the point of redevelopment.

In order to minimize the impact on surrounding businesses and roadways, demolition will begin on Sunday, September 25, 2016. Demolition will continue through September 26, 2016, with cleanup and removal of debris beginning following the demolition.

This property is being demolished with City of Springfield Demolition Bond funding.  Asbestos abatement and demolition is being completed by Associated Building Wreckers of Springfield. The total cost of asbestos abatement and demolition is $147,300.00.

Environmental oversight of the projects is being performed by ATC of West Springfield.
