Census Bureau Finds Larger Springfield Population

U.S. CENSUS BUREAU CERTIFIES SPRINGFIELD’S POPULATION AT 155,521 RESIDENTS

November 16, 2009 – Mayor Domenic J. Sarno announced today that he has received correspondence from the United States Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau, confirming that the City of Springfield’s population is at 155,521 residents.  Earlier this year, City officials had informally challenged the U.S. Census Bureau’s July 1, 2008 population estimate of 150,640 for the City of Springfield.

Mayor Sarno stated that this is terrific news for the City of Springfield and extended his thanks and appreciation to everyone involved in the appeals process.  “Having a population above 150,000 residents will allow greater funding opportunities for the City of Springfield and will continue to give us necessary legislative representation in Washington and Boston,” stated Sarno.
