Training

The SPD Training Division includes the Academy, In-Service Training, the Police Officer Training Program, the Cadet Training Program, and the Citizens Police Academy.  Deputy Chief David Kane is the Commanding Officer of the Training Division.  Training Division personnel ensure officers are prepared and educated for their work.

The Training Division is dedicated to providing officers with up-to-date training and ensuring they are informed on new law enforcement issues and trained in emerging technology.

Officers are trained in line with state requirements and year-round training includes legal updates, police interactions with people with mental illnesses, multi-agency response to active shooter, defensive tactics, Integrating Communication Assessment Tactics (ICAT), firearms, and medical. Officers also complete EPIC (Ethical Policing is Courageous) training, a peer intervention training program that advocates for active bystandership and aims to prevent mistakes or misconduct by training officers to intervene, and Implicit Bias training.

In addition, the Training Division provides new recruits with the skills and education necessary to be effective police officers. The SPD Training Division officers bring a wealth of experience and training to their positions.
