SPD Homicide Unit Investigation Leads to Arrest in Orange Street Murder

Springfield, Mass. --- On Thursday July 24th, at approximately 6:00 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and Warrant Apprehension Unit arrested 32-year-old Sakawn Straw at a home on the 0-100 block of Revere Street in connection with a double shooting on July 11th

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday July 11th, Springfield Police Officers responded to an apartment on the 200 block of Orange Street for a report of a gunshot victim. Officers located two adult male gunshot victims inside the apartment.  Both victims were transported to Baystate.  The first victim, later identified as 54-year-old Eric Wilson, suffered serious injuries, the second victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Wilson succumbed to his injuries on Sunday July 13th.

The Springfield Police Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Duda began investigating in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Murder Unit.  Homicide Detectives identified Straw as a suspect.  On Wednesday July 23rd, Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest. 

Straw is expected to be arraigned in Springfield District Court on Thursday. 

32-year-old Sakawn Straw of Springfield is charged with:

  • Arrest Warrant
    - Murder
    - Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
    - Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
    - Carrying a Firearm without a License
    - Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
