SPD FIU Detectives Arrest Suspect in Connection with Two Shootings

Springfield, Mass. — At approximately 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday July 15th, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit West and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (A.T.F.) arrested 20-year-old Zaddiel Aponte-Perez inside an apartment on the 200 block of Fernbank Road.  Aponte-Perez had two outstanding warrants in connection with two shootings. 

Around 8:50 p.m., on January 16th, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 600 block of Liberty Street. Officers located evidence of gunfire and a window from a business sustained damage. FIU Detectives identified Aponte-Perez as a suspect in this shooting.  On July 8th, Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest in connection with this January shooting.  

At approximately 3:50 p.m. on June 26th, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation on the 900 block of East Columbus Avenue. Officers located shell casings, ammunition and damage to a fence and vacuum at a business. FIU Detectives identified Aponte-Perez as a suspect in this shooting as well.  Also on July 8th, Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest in connection with this June shooting.  

On Wednesday July 16th, FIU Detectives were granted a search warrant for a vehicle connected to the investigation.  Detectives recovered $1430 in cash, a high-capacity firearm magazine, 45 rounds of ammunition, 56 bags of heroin and nearly a pound of marijuana.  Detectives have requested that Aponte-Perez face additional charges based on what was located in the vehicle. 

20-year-old Zaddiel Aponte-Perez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Arrest Warrant – Springfield District Court
    - Carrying a Firearm without a License
    - Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
    - Attempted Assault & Battery with a Firearm (Two Counts)
    - Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Arrest Warrant – Springfield District Court
    - Carrying a Firearm without a License
    - Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
    - Attempted Assault & Battery with a Firearm (Two Counts)
    - Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
    - Malicious Destruction of Property More than $1200
