SPD FIU Detectives Continue Enforcement Efforts in Worthington/Federal Street Area

Springfield, Mass. --- On Tuesday July 15th, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department under the direction of Sergeants Evan Donermeyer and David Robillard arrested four suspects and seized a trafficking weight of cocaine and heroin. 

For the past several weeks, FIU Detectives have been investigating illegal drug activity in the area of Federal and Worthington Streets, which have been disrupting local businesses in that area.  These efforts have led to numerous arrests and the seizure of illicit narcotics. 

Around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Detectives observed suspected drug activity in a Summit Street parking lot. 

Detectives approached a suspect, later identified as David Lazu, who tossed his cross-body bag inside a dumpster when he saw police.  Detectives detained Lazu and recovered five bags of heroin inside the cross-body bag. Detectives placed Lazu under arrest. 

Detectives then arrested a suspect, later identified as Jorge Torres.  Inside his vehicle, Detectives recovered approximately 1430 bags of heroin, which weighed approximately 28.6 grams.  Detectives also seized approximately 61.9 grams of crack-cocaine in a bag and in capsules as well as $930 in cash.  Torres also had an outstanding arrest warrant. 

Also arrested were Rafael Montes and Carlos Suarez.  Detectives recovered approximately 78.2 grams of crack and powder cocaine from Montes and Suarez along with $1031 in cash from Montes. 

26-year-old Jorge Torres of Hartford, Connecticut is charged with:

  • Cocaine Trafficking 36-100 Grams
  • Heroin Trafficking 18-36 Grams
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
  • Default Warrant
    - Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle

30-year-old Carlos Suarez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Trafficking Cocaine 36-100 Grams
  • Distribution of a Class A Drug
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law

28-year-old Rafael Montes of New Britain, Connecticut is charged with:

  • Trafficking Cocaine 36-100 Grams
  • Distribution of a Class A Drug
  • Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law

53-year-old David Lazu of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Class A Drug
