Update: Suspect Arrested after Crashing into Two Police Cruisers 

Springfield, Mass. - On Thursday June 12th around 9:00 a.m., Springfield Police Officers arrested a 42-year-old Ian James who was wanted in connection with an armed robbery.  

Officers received information Thursday morning, that a suspect, later identified as James, involved in a May 31st firearm-armed robbery on the 1400 block of Main Street was in a vehicle in the downtown area.  Officers located the suspect vehicle on Main Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.  James refused to stop and drove recklessly through the city and onto I-291.  Officers were eventually able to stop the vehicle on I-291 after James crashed into two Springfield Police Cruisers.  Once stopped, James attempted to escape by climbing out of the driver's side window of the car.  As James approached the guardrail, officers were able to take him into custody.  The adult female passenger remained in the vehicle, was detained and then released.     

Inside the car, officers recovered two bags of cocaine and a knife with spiked metallic knuckles for its handle.  James's vehicle also struck another vehicle on I-291.  The occupant was unharmed.  

One officer inside a rammed cruiser went to Baystate to evaluate his injuries, he has since been discharged.   James was also taken to the hospital.  He was discharged and released around 11:00 p.m., where he was booked at Springfield Police Headquarters.

  • Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (Three Counts)
  • Unregistered Motor Vehicle
  • Number Plate Violation to Conceal ID
  • Uninsured Motor Vehicle
  • Refuse to Identify Self
  • Carrying a Dangerous Weapon
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
  • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
  • Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash (Three Counts)
  • Arrest Warrant
