SPD FIU Investigation Leads to the Seizure of Three Illegal Firearms, Trafficking Weight of Cocaine and Heroin and Nearly $25,000 in Cash

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday June 4th, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) and Hampden County Sheriff's Department under the direction of Lieutenant Jaime Bruno and Sergeant Evan Donermeyer arrested three suspects, seized three illegal firearms, more than $24,000 in cash and a trafficking weight of heroin and cocaine.  

For the past several weeks, members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit have been investigating the illegal distribution of heroin from an apartment on the 0-100 block of Canon Circle. Detectives applied for and were granted a search warrant for the home with Jose Mendez-Collazo and Mariester Rivera as the suspects in the investigation.  

While conducting surveillance on Wednesday, Detectives observed Mendez-Collazo get into a car and leave the Canon Circle area.  Menez-Collazo parked on the 0-100 block of Mill Street and a female entered the car.  As she left the vehicle, Detectives detained the female, later identified as Arianna Alvarado-Torres, and Mendez-Collazo.  

Detectives recovered heroin from Alvarado-Torres and heroin and cocaine from Mendez-Collazo.  

While waiting to execute the search warrant at Canon Circle, Detectives observed Rivera get into a car and leave the area.  Detectives conducted a traffic stop on the 500 block of Cooley Street and detained Rivera.  

Detectives then executed the search warrant at Canon Circle.  They recovered more than 20 grams of cocaine inside the home, 32 grams of heroin (1643 bags), ammunition and three loaded firearms. One of the firearms was a rifle with a 30-round magazine.  Additionally, Detectives seized nearly $25,000 in cash.  Mendez-Collazo, Alvarado-Torres and Rivera were placed under arrest.  

41-year-old Jose Mendez-Collazo of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm without a License (Three Counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony (Three Counts)
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device
  • Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number
  • Improper Storage of a Firearm (Two Counts)
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Heroin/Fentanyl Trafficking 18-36 Grams
  • Cocaine Trafficking 18-36 Grams
  • Distribution of a Class A Drug
  • Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle

38-year-old Arianna Alvarado-Torres of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Class A Drug
  • Default Warrant
    - Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle

29-year-old Mariester Rivera of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm without a License (Three Counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony (Three Counts)
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Feeding Device
  • Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number
  • Improper Storage of a Firearm (Two Counts)
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Heroin/Fentanyl Trafficking 18-36 Grams
