SPD FIU Detectives Respond to Citizens Concerns, Seize Firearm, Crack-Cocaine and Arrest 5 Suspects

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday September 30th, at approximately 4:30 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) along with members of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested five suspects, seized a loaded firearm, crack-cocaine and cash on the 900 block of Worthington Street.

FIU Detectives have been investigating citizen complaints of open-air drug activity along the Worthington Street corridor between Federal and Armory Streets.

On Wednesday afternoon, Detectives conducting surveillance observed suspected drug deals with Provost and Rivera as the alleged dealers.  Detectives then observed a third suspect, later identified as Dunesky Diaz, allegedly part of this drug operation as well.   Detectives also identified Jose Quinones-Pizarro as an alleged look-out for the suspects.

Around 4:20 p.m., officers observed another suspected drug deal involving a subject, later identified as Bernardo Reyes-Velasquez.

Shortly after, Detectives and Sheriff’s Deputies approached the five suspects in order to detain them.  Diaz attempted to run away but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. Detectives recovered crack-cocaine and cash from Diaz.

Detectives then arrested Rivera, Provost and Quinones-Pizarro.  Inside the vehicle, that Rivera and Provost had been in through much of the afternoon, Detectives recovered a loaded illegal firearm and 12 caplets of crack-cocaine.

Detectives also recovered crack-cocaine residue from Reyes-Velasquez, and he was placed under arrest.

Detectives seized $1184 in cash from Diaz, Provost and Rivera.
