Suspect with 90 Adult Arraignments and Two Outstanding Warrants Arrested

Springfield, Mass. --- On Tuesday July 28th at approximately 7:15 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Hampden County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested 40-year-old Christopher Cummings on the 200 block of State Street. 

Law enforcement officers were aware that Cummings was wanted on two outstanding warrants and had allegedly made numerous threats he will not go back to jail while currently having arrest warrants. 

Around 7:00 a.m., officers located Cummings riding a bicycle in the area of Central and Main Street.  Mobile surveillance continued until additional officers arrived on the 200 block of State Street. 

At this time, officers exited their vehicles, while Cummings attempted to get back on the bike and ride away.  Law enforcement officers were able to catch up to Cummings and attempted to gain control of him on the ground.  Cummings began to violently struggle, kicking and hitting officers' numerous times. 

While struggling with officers, Cummings reached into his waistband and pulled out a knife, which he opened and attempted to use on officers, while his arm was restrained.  A Taser and OC Spray were utilized to detain this combative armed subject.  Once Cummings was handcuffed, he continued thrashing and kicking officers.  Officers were eventually able to place him under arrest. 

Cummings had 90 adult arraignments and guilty findings on charges including but not limited to Manslaughter and Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.   

 40-year-old Christopher Cummings of Springfield is charged with:

  • Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Two Counts)
  • Carrying a Dangerous Weapon with an Active Warrant
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Assault & Battery on a Police Officer (Three Counts)
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Arrest Warrant – Westfield District Court
    - Larceny Over $1200 (Two Counts)
  • Arrest Warrant – Palmer District Court
    - Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
    - No Inspection Sticker
