SPD Proud to Accompany Survivors to State House for Signing of An Act Honoring Blue Star Families

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday, Springfield Police Deputy Chief David Kane and Springfield Police Officer Anthony Kelliher accompanied Doris Beauregard-Shecrallah and Maura Schiavina to the State House in Boston for the signing of An Act Honoring Blue Star Families. 

Wednesday, in a ceremony with families of fallen Troopers and Officers, Governor Maura Healey signed this act creating a new commemorative license plate for eligible family members of those killed in the line of duty. Thanks to bipartisan legislation filed by Senator Bruce Tarr and Representative Thomas Walsh, the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) will issue the plates free of charge in recognition of the extraordinary sacrifice made by police personnel and their families. 

Doris' husband Alain Beauregard and Maura's brother Michael Schiavina were shot and killed in the line of duty in November 1985.  

The Springfield Police Department has lost 17 officers in the line of duty since the city’s founding in 1636. A Fallen Officer Memorial, located outside the police headquarters on Pearl Street, is dedicated to the memory of the 17 officers who sacrificed their lives while in the performance of their duties. A plaque for each officer is fixed to the Memorial. A Memorial Ceremony is held at the Fallen Officer Memorial each May during National Police Week to honor and remember the fallen Springfield Police officers.
