Loaded Firearm Seized after ShotSpotter Activation

Springfield, Mass. --- At approximately 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, Springfield Police Officers seized a loaded firearm from a 14-year-old after responding to a ShotSpotter activation. 

Around 3:45 p.m., officers responded to the 0-100 block of Oak Grove Avenue for a ShotSpotter activation.  Officers located evidence on Oak Grove Avenue and Kenyon Street as well as property damage on Oak Grove Avenue and Burr Street. 

Members of the Springfield Police Real-Time Analysis Center (R-TAC) relayed a description of individuals that were involved in the shooting.  Officers then observed three of these subjects on Dawes Street.  Three 14-year-old males were identified and detained. Officers recovered a loaded firearm from one of the teenager’s waistbands. 

After the preliminary investigation, two of the juveniles were released.  The third 14-year-old was placed under arrest on firearms charges but was not charged in the shooting.  The Springfield Police Detective Bureau under the direction of Captain Trent Duda are investigating. 

Due to his age, the name of the juvenile arrested will not be released.
