SPD Anti-OHV Detail Leads to Seizure of Dirt Bike & ATV
Springfield, Mass. — On Thursday June 4th and Saturday June 6th, members of the Springfield Police Department working Off-Highway-Vehicle (OHV) enforcement details seized two illegal off-highway vehicles and arrested two riders.
Springfield Police Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. These vehicles are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders. Some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.
In the early evening of Thursday June 4th, officers observed an ATV rider without a helmet on Hancock Street. Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the ride continued into a driveway on Leyfred Terrace where Tomeco Kelly was placed under arrest. The ATV was seized and towed
In the early afternoon of Saturday June 6th, officers working this detail observed a dirt bike rider, later identified as Eulysses Hernandez Jr., without a helmet in the area of Carew Street and St. James Avenue. Hernandez Jr. was riding on the wrong side of the street, cutting off traffic. Officers placed Hernandez Jr. under arrest when he stopped on Farnsworth Street. The dirt bike was seized and towed.
52-year-old Tomeco Kelly of Springfield is charged with:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License – Subsequent Offense
- Failure to Stop for Police
- Operating a Snow/Recreational Vehicle on a Public Way
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Helmet Violation
19-year-old Eulysses Hernandez Jr. of Springfield is charged with:
- Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle
- Operating a Snow/Recreational Vehicle on a Public Way
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Helmet Violation
- Negligent Operation of an Off-Highway-Vehicle
