SPD FIU Detectives Seize Loaded Firearm with 50 Round Drum
Springfield, Mass. – On Tuesday May 26th at approximately 10:20 p.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Sergeants Evan Donermeyer and Patrick Denault seized a loaded illegal firearm with a 50 round drum and arrested 23-year-old Navon Kelly on the 0-100 block of Newland Street.
For the past week, FIU Detectives have been investigating Kelly for the illegal possession of a firearm. On Tuesday, Detectives received information that Kelly was in possession of a firearm drum magazine and an illegal firearm.
Tuesday evening, Detectives located Kelly on the 0-100 block of Newland Street. Detectives attempted to detain Kelly, but he started running away. Following a brief foot pursuit, Detectives were able to detain the suspect.
Inside Kelly’s backpack, Detectives recovered a loaded firearm with a 50 round drum magazine as well as 18 bags of marijuana. Detectives placed Kelly under arrest.
23-year-old Navon Kelly of Springfield is charged with:
- Carrying a Firearm without a License
- Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way
- Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
