SPD Anti-OHV Detail Leads to the Seizure of Three Dirt Bikes
Springfield, Mass. – On Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd, members of the Springfield Police Department working on an Off-Highway-Vehicle (OHV) enforcement detail seized three illegal dirt bikes, arrested three riders and issued a criminal complaint to another rider.
Springfield Police Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles. These vehicles are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders. Some riders are also known to drive recklessly, putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.
On Friday afternoon, Officers observed a dirt bike rider without a helmet on Armory Street. Once parked, Officers approached the rider, later identified as Luis Vazquez. Vazquez had a suspended license and was placed under arrest; his dirt bike was seized.
Later on Friday, officers observed another dirt bike rider, later identified as Eugene Gonzalez, riding without a helmet on Jefferson Street. Gonzalez then got off the bike and another rider, later identified as Geovannie Alicea got onto the dirt bike without a helmet and drove through Calhaun Park. Once stopped, officers placed both Alicea and Gonzalez under arrest. The dirt bike was seized.
On Saturday afternoon, officers observed a dirt bike rider on Catherine Street. The rider, a 14-year-old juvenile male, was not wearing a helmet. Once parked on the 700 block of State Street, officers approached the rider, who was not of age to have a license. The dirt bike was also unregistered and uninsured. This dirt bike revealed the bike to have been stolen out of Connecticut. Officers are requesting a criminal complaint for the 14-year-old. Due to his age, his name and specific charges will not be released.
35-year-old Luis Vazquez of Springfield is charged with:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Public Way Violation
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Helmet Violation
18-year-old Eugene Gonzalez of Westfield is charged with:
- Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Public Way Violation
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Helmet Violation
20-year-old Geovannie Alicea of Westfield is charged with:
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Public Way Violation
- Unregistered Motor Vehicle
- Uninsured Motor Vehicle
- Snow/Recreational Vehicle Helmet Violation
