SPD Officers Seize Illegal Dirt Bike

Springfield, Mass. — On Saturday April 11th, members of the Springfield Police Department working on an Off-Highway-Vehicle (OHV) enforcement detail seized an illegal dirt bike, issued two criminal complaints and one citation.

Springfield Police Officers conduct these details to deter the illegal riding of dirt bikes and other off-highway vehicles.  These vehicles are illegal on any city street and have led to serious injuries and death to numerous riders.  These riders are also known to drive recklessly putting pedestrians and other vehicular traffic in danger.

In the afternoon, officers observed a dirt bike rider not wearing a helmet in the area of Hancock Street.  The rider drove onto the sidewalk to avoid traffic and put other motorists and pedestrians in danger.  Officers later observed the same dirt bike with a different rider driving recklessly in the area of Locust Street.   Officers then approached both riders on Leyfred Terrace when the bike was stopped. Officers seized the dirt bike and filed criminal complaints for the 16 and 17-year-old juvenile male riders.

Also during this enforcement, officers issued a citation to a legal motorcycle rider who was not wearing a helmet.
