SPD FIU Detectives Assist Rhode Island State Police with Arresting Shooting Suspect

Springfield, Mass. — On Wednesday February 25th at approximately 4:20 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) Warrant Apprehension Section, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Hampden County Sheriff's Department and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested 26-year-old Zachary Martins in connection with a shooting in Rhode Island.  

Law Enforcement officers had an arrest warrant for Martins and located him at a home on the 300 block of Main Street in Indian Orchard Wednesday morning and placed him under arrest.  

26-year-old Zachary Martins of Riverside, Rhode Island is charged with:

  • Fugitive from Justice Court Warrant (6th Rhode Island District Court)
    - Drive-By Shooting
    - Conspiracy - Felony greater than 5 to 10 years
    - Discharging a Firearm when Committing a Crime of Violence - Injury or Endanger
    - Discharging a Firearm when Committing a Crime of Violence - No Injury
    - Possession of a Prohibited Firearm - Person Convicted of Crime of Violence
    - Carrying a Pistol or Revolver without a License or Permit
    - Duty to Stop for an Accident Resulting in Injury (Two Counts)
    - Obstructing an Officer in their Execution of Duty
    - False Report of a Crime
    - Duty to Stop for an Accident Resulting in Damage to a Vehicle

On February 25, 2026, members of the Major Crimes Unit charged Zachary Martins, age 26, of 304 Main Street, Springfield, Massachusetts, with the following: 1) Drive-by Shootings; 2) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence - Resulting in Injury; 3) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence; 4) License or Permit Required for Carrying a Pistol; 5) Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons Prohibited; 6) Conspiracy; 7) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 8) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 9) Duty to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Attended Motor Vehicle; 10) False Report of a Crime; and 11) Obstruction of an Officer in Execution of Duty. Mr. Martins was taken into custody in Massachusetts and will be held pending extradition proceedings to Rhode Island.

On February 25, 2026, members of the Major Crimes Unit arrested Troy Torres, age 20, of 99 Ives Street, Apt 1B, Providence, Rhode Island, for the following: 1) Drive-by Shootings; 2) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence - Resulting in Injury; 3) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence; 4) License or Permit Required for Carrying a Pistol; 5) Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons Prohibited; 6) Conspiracy; 7) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 8) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 9) Duty to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Attended Motor Vehicle; 10) False Report of a Crime; and 11) Obstruction of an Officer in Execution of Duty. Mr. Torres was processed at State Police Headquarters, special arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and turned over to officials at the ACI Intake Center pending his arraignment in Sixth Division District Court.

On February 25, 2026, members of the Major Crimes Unit charged Jamari Bell, age 23, of 286 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston, Rhode Island, with the following: 1) Drive-by Shootings; 2) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence - Resulting in Injury; 3) Using a Firearm When Committing a Crime of Violence; 4) License or Permit Required for Carrying a Pistol; 5) Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons Prohibited; 6) Conspiracy; 7) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 8) Duty to Stop in Accident Resulting in Injury; 9) Duty to Stop for Accident Resulting in Damage to Attended Motor Vehicle ;10) False Report of a Crime; 11) Obstruction of an Officer in Execution of Duty; 12) Possession With the Intent to Deliver a Schedule II Controlled Substance - Fentanyl; and 13) Possession With the Intent to Deliver a Schedule II Controlled Substance - Cocaine. Mr. Bell is currently incarcerated at the Adult Correctional Institutions and will be arraigned on his new charges in Sixth Division District Court.

On February 25, 2026, members of the Major Crimes Unit arrested Joseph Carvalho, age 27, of 155 Bernice Street, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, for the following: 1) Harboring a Criminal. Mr. Carvalho was processed at State Police Headquarters, special arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and turned over to officials at the ACI Intake Center pending his arraignment in Sixth Division District Court.
