SPD Homicide Unit Investigation Leads to Arrest of Second Suspect in Home Street Murder

Springfield, Mass. --- At approximately 7:00 a.m., Friday December 12th, members of the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Massachusetts State Police VFAS West and Hampden County Sheriff’s Department arrested 27-year-old Joey Sanchez on the 0-100 block of Quincy Street in connection with a November 30th homicide. 

At approximately 10:40 p.m. Sunday November 30th, officers responded to the 0-100 block of Home Street for a report of a gunshot victim.

Officers located an adult male gunshot victim inside an apartment.  The victim was transported to Baystate where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The Hampden District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as 27-year-old Shain West of Springfield. 

The SPD Homicide Unit under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating and identified 21-year-old Daevon Shular as a suspect. 

On Monday December 1st, Springfield Police Officers under the direction of Captain Duda arrested Shular at Baystate in connection with the shooting.  Shular was privately transported to the hospital November 30th due to a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.    

Homicide Detectives continued investigating and identified 27-year-old Joey Sanchez as a second suspect in connection with the shooting.  On December 10th, Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest. 

Friday morning, Sanchez was taken into custody at a home on Quincy Street. 

This remains an ongoing investigation conducted by the Springfield Police Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney's Murder Unit.  

27-year-old Joey Sanchez of Chicopee is charged with:

  • Arrest Warrant
    - Murder
    - Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
    - Carrying a Firearm without a License
    - Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
    - Attempt to Commit a Crime (Armed Robbery)

21-year-old Daevon Shular of Seguin, Texas is charged with:

  • Murder
  • Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License
  • Carrying a Firearm without a License
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building
  • Attempt to Commit a Crime (Armed Robbery)
