Superintendent Akers Recognizes Officer Nathanial Lopes for Serving our Community

Springfield, Mass. --- Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers would like to publicly recognize Officer Nathanial Lopes & Hampden County Sheriff’s Deputy Corporal Matthew Lopez who are assigned to the Union Station Safe Travels Initiative for serving the public in a manner that shines a positive light on our department. 

Christine White of the Republican Newspaper recently published an article titled, “A Recent Encounter with the Men in Blue.”  In part it reads, “I want to tell you about a very pleasant encounter I had recently in Springfield with two officers of the law. I will admit to not being the biggest fan of the men in blue in my lifetime.  (At Union Station) There were so many cars that a police officer was directing traffic.  The officer approached; a frown covered my face.  But he politely asked me to form a double-parked line of cars near the entrance. The officer then said, “I’ll watch for (your friend) and direct her to you.  She emerged and the officer waved her over. 

At the end of the day we pulled back into Union Station and I was nervous about getting lost.  I approached a young man in blue and he said, “I can help you.”  He made sure I understood (the directions).  And so, ended a day that proved me wrong.  The men in blue can be quite charming and helpful when you need them.  And so I say thank you to the two officers who helped me that day.”
