SPD FIU Investigation Leads to Recovery of Illegal Firearm, Trafficking Weight of Heroin/Fentanyl

Springfield, Mass. — On Friday October 9th, at approximately 5:30 a.m., members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) under the direction of Captain Joseph Dunn, members of the Springfield Police Emergency Services Unit (ESU) under the direction of Lieutenant Matthew Benoit along with members of the Hampden County Sheriff's Department seized a loaded large capacity firearm, heroin/fentanyl and cocaine while arresting two suspects on the 500 block of Canon Circle.  

FIU Detectives have been investigating illegal drug distribution in the Temple Street area with Anthony Gonzalez as a suspect.  Detectives applied for and were granted a warrant to search his home on Canon Circle and his vehicle.  

Around 5:30 a.m., the search warrant was executed on Canon Circle.  Three adults, including Gonzalez, and two children were inside the apartment.  

During a search of the apartment, Detectives recovered approximately 549 bags of fentanyl/heroin which weighed approximately 11 grams.  Detectives also recovered nearly 500 rounds of various ammunition and a loaded large-capacity firearm.  The firearm was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.  

During a search of the vehicle, Detectives recovered approximately 3.7 grams of cocaine.  

Detectives placed Gonzalez and Kayliannie Mata under arrest.  The other adult inside the apartment and children were released.  

Gonzalez has a prior conviction for Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.  

25-year-old Anthony Gonzalez of Springfield is charged with:

  • Fentanyl Trafficking More than 10 Grams
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class A Drug
  • Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class B Drug
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm during the Commission of a Felony
  • Firearm Violation with One Prior Violent/Drug Crime
  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Reckless Endangerment of a Child (Two Counts)

27-year-old Kayliannie Mata of Springfield is charged with:

  • Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card
  • Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
  • Improper Storage of a Large Capacity Firearm
  • Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm
