Central Street Corridor Project Begins

The City announced the demolition of multiple buildings along Central, Hickory and Walnut Street, as the beginning of the Central Street Corridor Improvement Project. The demolition will include the buildings located at 468 Walnut Street, 462 Central Street and ultimately 46-48 Hickory Street, upon relocation of occupants.  The razing of the properties will allow for the long planned re-alignment of the Central Street corridor and expansion of Ruth Elizabeth Park.  The project is the result of the public rebuilding process lead by residents and Rebuild Springfield following the June 1, 2011 tornado.  

The project will re-direct Central Street traffic flow into a newly widened and improved Hickory Street and will permit improved traffic flow for Central, Hickory and Rifle Streets.  Construction will include installation of sidewalks, trees and safety improvements.  Additionally, the project will permit more visibility and accessibility to Ruth Elizabeth Park for neighborhood residents. The project will greatly enhance the park with improved infrastructure such an enhanced ADA accessible and universal access park entrance and interior walking path, walking trail improvements, and trailhead amenities, including trail signage and wayfinding to connect area parks. 

The bulk of the project is being completed with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development Block Grant - Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds.  The improvements to Ruth Elizabeth Park are being completed with a combination of Land & Water Conservation grant funding and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.  Construction is anticipated to start this fall and anticipated completion by 2021.

One-for-One Replacement Plan for Marble Street Apartments

The City has submitted to HUD it's one-for-one replacement plan for the Marble Street Apartments at 111-117 Marble Street and 112-118 Marble Street. Public Meeting Scheduled

The City of Springfield has scheduled a public meeting to discuss upcoming improvement to the Central Street corridor.  The meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. at the J.C. Williams Community Center, 132 Florence Street, Springfield.

City Announces $750,000 Renovation to Nathan Bill Park

Mayor Sarno and Congressman Richard E. Neal have announced a $750,000 renovation to Nathan Bill Park in East Forest Park.  Nathan Bill Park and the East Forest Park neighborhood were directly impacted by the June 1, 2011 tornado.

The renovation is being funded with a CDBG-DR grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.  The City, in conjunction with the East Forest Park Civic Association and area residents, developed a master plan for Nathan Bill Park. Improvements will include new tennis courts, improved athletic fields, improvements to the existing playground and swings, a new splash pad, landscape improvements and improved parking. The project is out for public bid and construction will be completed by fall 2015.
