- District, State, Higher Education, and Community Leaders to Gather for Historic Announcement and Community Investment Event -
Springfield Public Schools (SPS) will host a public launch event announcing the creation of Massachusetts' first Innovation School Zone, marking a new chapter in the district's efforts to preserve and expand educational opportunities for students.
The news conference will be led by Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall, and Innovation School Director Michael Calvanese, who will outline the vision for the Innovation School Zone and discuss how Springfield is building on the success of its school turnaround efforts while preserving the innovative practices that have helped students thrive.
The announcement will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 9 a.m. in the New England Board Room at the Springfield Public Schools Central Office, 1550 Main Street.
The event will bring together state and local elected officials, education leaders, former and current Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership leaders, higher education partners, business leaders, philanthropic organizations, educators, students, and families.
The Innovation School Zone will include eight schools transitioning from Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership (SEZP) status while maintaining key elements that have contributed to their success, including leadership, flexibility, learning time, and academic programming.
The event will also highlight opportunities for community and philanthropic investment in programs that support student achievement, college and career readiness, and postsecondary success.
