Today, on his way back down to City Hall from an announcement at Adams Park, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stopped to check on progress at three new housing development projects here in the City of Springfield.
(1) the Residences at the Vault on State Street (workforce development housing)
Construction is underway at the "Residences at The Vault" located at 300-310 State Street. The building was constructed in 1924 as the Federal Land Bank of Springfield and is being redeveloped into 52 affordable workforce housing apartments by First Resource Development. This building has some truly stunning architectural details and the former bank vaults within the building inspired the project name.
The project is being supported by a combination of funding from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Springfield and the U.S. Department of Housing Development, which includes historic and Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, as well as HOME Investment Partnership funding. Creating more affordable housing units in Springfield would not be possible without the federal funding that supports these types of public-private partnerships.
(2) Merrick Park Apartments on State Street (workforce development housing)
The Merrick Park Apartments, being worked on right now, are located across from the Springfield Central Library – a renowned Andrew Carnegie Library, and Museums/Quadrangle, near the corner of State and Maple Streets in Springfield. First Resource Development is redeveloping the properties at 195 State Street and 19-25 Maple Street into 62 housing units.

(3) East Columbus Avenue Housing Project (market rate housing)
The site of the old Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Anne Fields Pie Place on East Columbus Avenue is undergoing a transformation with a private developer working to gut the interior and produce market rate housing units. This area has sat in disrepair for decades. Following this great investment, it will provide much needed housing, and will be a much better welcome to the city as the gateway to our South End and downtown off Interstate 91.
