Mayor Domenic J. Sarno’s Aide and Deputy Communications Director Rose McCaffrey visited Ms. Sophia Grasso’s fourth grade class at Mary M. Walsh School for their end of year Tiny House PBL (Project Based Learning) Project.
For this PBL, the students spend the last few months of the school year working on tiny houses. They start by watching videos and reading articles about the pros and cons of tiny house living. They then learn about blueprints, architects and engineers. Students then talk to a realtor in person about what it is like to speak with clients. Students then interview real clients to see what they want in their tiny houses, such as size, how many bedrooms, and their budget.
The project, though math heavy, it includes reading, research along with teamwork and social skills. The students create teamwork agreements, add the cost of all the items in the house, find remaining budgets, create multiple drafts of their houses all behind the scenes.
McCaffrey states, “I always look forward to working with the students in Ms. Grasso’s fourth grade class when they work on their tiny houses. With today being the first round of the project, I’m excited to see her students creativity come to life and to come back and ‘buy’ my tiny house!”
