Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined President of the Massachusetts Building Trades Unions Frank Callahan, President of the Pioneer Valley Building Trades Council Colton Andrews, and State Senator Adam Gomez to bring greetings at the Mass Building Trades Unions 107th Annual Convention on Wednesday morning at MGM Springfield.
Mayor Sarno states, “I appreciate our brothers and sisters in Labor from the Massachusetts Building Trades Unions for once again holding their annual convention here in the City of Springfield. My administration has supported numerous projects, public and private, where our friends in labor have helped to build. On my way over this morning, I passed by the completely renovated 31 Elm Street market rate housing project with Tony’s Barbershop open on the ground floor on the way to MGM Springfield where the MBTU Convention was held – two projects naysayers said would not get done, and those, along with Union Station down the street and the new Convention Center Car Park, were all done all working together thanks to our partnership with labor and the building trades.”
“From building and improving our schools to the various economic and redevelopment projects, the City of Springfield is proud to support and stand with the leadership of our local labor and trade unions,” continued Mayor Sarno. “I often share with our students the importance of math and stem, the pride of being able to do something with your hands, and that you can make a great career for yourself with vocational skills. I deeply appreciate our friends in budling trades who have been great at offering internships for kids here in Springfield especially students from Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy – a top vocational school which has been ranked as a model for excellence – with many Putnam students able to be hired, joining the local labor force with employable skills. We have more projects in the pipeline, like the brand new Gerena School in the North End, and my administration is committed to exploring every means in which we can to create more of that good four-letter word – ‘JOBS’”
