Mayor Sarno asks State Senators Gomez and Oliveira to help advance Local Tax Relief legislation

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno sent a formal request to our local members of the State Senate to ask for their help in advancing HB 3213: An Act relative to the assessment of local property taxes in the city of Springfield in the state legislature.

Mayor Sarno’s administration, with the City Council’s approval, created a Targeted Tax Relief Initiative and Tax Relief Committee to provide much needed targeted tax relief for homeowners that potentially do not qualify under the current tax relief exemptions. This type of Tax Relief initiative is authorized by Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 60, Section 3D.  Today, Mayor Sarno sent a letter to State Senators Adam Gomez and Jake Oliveira to request their help in getting the home-rule bill through the legislature.

Mayor Sarno states, “The passage of this home-rule legislation will help our residents as we continue to try and provide as much tax-relief as possible to eligible home owners. With this legislation we can help supplement the Targeted Tax Relief Fund with a one-time payment of $1 million of certified free cash that I have set aside. Besides the $1 million I have allocated for this fund, we are welcoming donated contributions to increase the account, and have worked with the City Council’s Special Pilot Committee on New Revenue which focuses on generating contributions from our non-profit community.”

“As my administration continues to provide much-needed tax relief for our residents, and with many who may not qualify for the various tax exemptions that are already in place, I am hopeful to have this local targeted tax relief option for our residents,” continued Mayor Sarno.  “Other communities in the Commonwealth have successfully adopted this and Springfield is looking forward to providing yet another means to offer tax relief for those eligible homeowners in need.”
