Mayor Domenic J. Sarno congratulates Ruth E. Carter on her historic fifth Oscar nomination, the first black woman to reach five Oscar nominations. Ruth E. Carter is nominated in the ‘Costume Design’ category for her work on the movie “Sinners”, directed by Ryan Coogler. Previously, she has won two Oscars for her work in costume design on “Black Panther” in 2018 and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in 2023.
Mayor Sarno states, “Congratulations to Springfield’s own Ruth E. Carter on her historic fifth Oscar Nomination. She is the first black woman to reach five Oscar nominations. My administration was proud to be able to celebrate her legacy with a mural on the Rebecca Johnson Elementary School in August 2023, in hopes of inspiring all the youth of Springfield that with their education, and hard work, they can and will succeed. Sinners was nominated for a historic sixteen Oscar Awards, beating previous record holders The Titanic (14), La La Land (14), and All About Eve (14). The Oscars will air on Sunday, March 15th, 2026.
