Mayor Sarno and Veterans Department join with Harold Marney American Legion Post 420 for Special Dedication Ceremony

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Veterans’ Services Director Joe DeCaro joined with members of Harold Marney's family and members of the American Legion Post 420 for a monument dedication, along with the unveiling of upgrades done to the building.

Harold Marney was an East Springfield native who served his country in World War II. Marney tragically lost his life when he was killed on the PT-109 torpedo patrol boat. He was just 19 years old, and had only been on the boat for a week when a Japanese Destroyer exploded into the craft near the Solomon Islands. Also on board was a 26-year-old future U.S. President, John F Kennedy, who survived, along with 10 other crew members. The ceremony took place on what would have been Harold Marney's 101st birthday.

Mayor Sarno states, “Harold Marney gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and its citizens, and that is something that will never be forgotten, as the Harold Marney American Legion Post 420, which is located just streets over from where he was born and raised, continues to honor his legacy with a monument dedicated to his honor. Thank you for your service, and your ultimate sacrifice. God Bless.”

Mayor Sarno added, “I am also looking forward to seeing the upgrades to the Legion, which was awarded ARPA funding through my administration.”
