Mayor Sarno, Superintendent Dinnall, City, and School officials join for Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Meeting at Washington School

Today, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Springfield Public Schools (SPS) Superintendent Dr. Sonia Dinnall, the city’s Chief Administrative and Financial Officer (CAFO) Cathy Buono, SPS Chief Financial Officer Patrick Roach, Executive Director of Parks, Buildings, & Recreation Management Tom Ashe, Director of School and Municipal Buildings Jon Carignan, Department of Capital Asset Construction Director Peter Garvey, and Washington School Principal Keith Asher joined with members of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) team today at Washington Street School for a meeting to discuss ongoing enhancements to our school buildings.

Mayor Sarno states, “Thank you to the MSBA team for being with us today at Washington school, and taking the time to tour Alice B. Beal Elementary School and the Kensington International School too. I also commend our city and schools team for their continued dedicated efforts to maintain and enhance our schools. I attended Washington School for 6th grade and have wonderful memories there – but the building itself is one of the oldest school buildings in operation and we are looking to assess current needs in order to improve learning environments. I cannot thank Treasurer Deb Goldberg and our Massachusetts School Building Authority enough for their dedication and support we continue to work toward getting more new school buildings constructed. As I have stated before, my administration will continue to build new schools and rehab our schools and we appreciate the MSBA and their support on nearly one billion dollars of investments that we have accomplished in new school building construction and rehab – the most in the state. My administration is proud to have a great working relationship with the MSBA and have successfully partnered on a number of projects. We have had two very successful school building combination projects: DeBerry/Swan and Brightwood/Lincoln. We hope to move forward with another project constructing a state-of-the-art building to house both White Street School and Kensington School – both built in the very early 1900s. In addition, the Gerena school project is our number one school building priority and we remain hopeful that another state-of-the-art school building will be built to replace the current Gerena building.”
