Daytime water pipe work will be conducted in Springfield on Ormond Street, including at the intersections of Belmont Avenue and Sumner Avenue
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing that it will be advancing daytime water pipe work on Ormond Street in Springfield starting on July 7, 2025, and continuing through the fall of 2025. These operations will require temporary, weekday closures of Ormond Street during work hours, as needed.
These operations represent field activities being performed by the contractor for the Springfield ‘X’ Intersection Reconstruction Project and are necessary for the new water main being installed in advance of roadway construction work that will take place on Sumner Avenue, Dickinson Street, and Belmont Avenue.
Temporary water service interruptions for individual properties are expected on Ormond Street, Belmont Avenue, and Sumner Avenue. Notifications for specific properties, dates, and times, will be provided, in coordination with the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission. More information regarding water service and the Ormond Street water pipe project is available at waterandsewer.org or by contacting the Commission at 413-310-3501 or cfs@waterandsewer.org.
This work will occur during weekday daytime hours, generally between 7:00 a.m., and 3:00 p.m., and activities at this location are anticipated to continue through the fall of 2025. Activities will include asphalt removal, excavation, trenching, water pipe installation, material deliveries, exporting material, staging of construction equipment, and asphalt restoration.
To allow crews to conduct water pipe work, the contractor expects to close Ormond Street to through traffic, during working hours, Monday through Friday, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Local access for residents, businesses, and emergency services will be maintained. On-street parking restrictions are anticipated during work hours due to site safety and staging of equipment. This work is anticipated to take place on:
-
- Ormond Street between Sumner Avenue and Belmont Avenue
- Belmont Avenue at the Ormond Street intersection
- Sumner Avenue at the Ormond Street intersection.
These operations and this schedule are weather dependent and subject to change. Police details and appropriate signage will be deployed to assist traffic flow around the work zones.
Those traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution. Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place.
