MassDOT holds Public Information Meeting on the “X” Intersection Reconstruction
City of Springfield Department of Public Works Director Chris Cignoli joined Public Involvement Lead Billy Parent, Design Consultant Steven Savaria, and MassDOT officials for the Public Information Meeting hosted by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) on The Springfield “X” Intersection Reconstruction project that took place Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. at the Forest Park Middle School Auditorium.
MassDOT held the Public Information Meeting to update the public on the status of the reconstruction of Sumner Avenue at the intersection of Dickinson Street and Belmont Avenue, The “X” Intersection, in Springfield, MA. The meeting was recorded and will be available thanks to Focus Springfield.
The public was encouraged to attend this meeting to learn more about the project and provide feedback, and also sign up for project updates to learn about future meetings. See the sign up link below.
Information was shared on the project background, the project design, the schedule and construction phasing, early construction activity, public involvement, and next steps. Find copies of the document/slides shared below.
Project improvements include: traffic pattern changes and the addition of transition lanes (i.e. auxiliary lanes), new traffic signals and traffic signal coordination, 5-foot bicycle lanes and widening and reconstruction of sidewalks to shared-use paths, pedestrian facility and accessibility upgrades, bus stop and shelter upgrades, and replacement of street lighting, furnishings, and landscaping.
Early construction activity is underway as of March 2025 and includes the installation of advanced traffic signage, survey work, the contractor mobilizing to the site, tree and vegetation removal, and preliminary utility investigation.
