The City of Springfield Aquatics Division will once again be offering a Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course during April school vacation week. Course participants will learn CPR, First Aid, AED, and Water Rescue Skills. Free certifications are also available for Springfield Public Schools students.
The April Lifeguard Training Course will run from Tuesday, April 22nd through Friday, April 25, 2025. The course runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will take place at Milton Bradley Elementary School at 22 Mulberry Street, Springfield, MA 01105.
The training course is free for Springfield Public Schools students. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
Persons 15 years of age and over can register for the course. A PRE-COURSE IN-POOL SKILLS TEST will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2025 5:30 p.m. at Milton Bradley Elementary School pool for all course participants. Candidates must be prepared to pass the following:
- Prerequisite 1: Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes (using your legs only), and then swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control.
- Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

Getting trained and certified early in the year can lead to great summer job opportunities as a certified lifeguard. I encourage our Springfield Public Schools students to explore this opportunity. The program certifications are free for students of Springfield Public Schools. Cost for the program is $250.00 (cash or check only) per person for Springfield residents and $350.00 for non-City residents. All fees must be paid by the first day of class.
