Mayor Domenic J. Sarno issues a statement in response to ongoing contract negotiations between Baystate Health and Wellpoint. Wellpoint recently sent a letter to city employees covered under their health insurance that Baystate Health will no longer accept Wellpoint as a health insurance provider after December 31, 2024, due to their contact agreement expiring.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “I have just been notified by our HR and Benefits Department that city employees receiving Wellpoint Insurance were recently sent notification indicating that Baystate Health will no longer accept Wellpoint as a health insurance provider after December 31, 2024, due to their contract agreement expiring. If this were to happen, nearly half of my city employees, over 2,500 city employees and some retirees, and their families would be adversely impacted. This simply is unacceptable. It is my hope that negotiations between the two parties, Wellpoint and Baystate Health, will continue in earnest and that a plausible agreement can be reached ASAP, so that there will be no interruption or lapse in their health care services within the Baystate Health system that would negatively affect our 2,500 employees, retirees and their families.”
