Mayor Domenic J. Sarno was proud to join for a special ceremony as The UMass Amherst Springfield Center in Tower Square was officially re-named for former UMass Trustee and Springfield Urban League President Henry M. Thomas III.
Henry M. Thomas III, Esq. was a leading advocate for establishing the UMass center here in his hometown of Springfield, and the first person of color to lead the UMass Board of Trustees. Joining today along with Henry M. Thomas III and family for the special unveiling ceremony were Congressman Richard Neal, UMass President Marty Meehan, UMass Amherst chancellor Javier Reyes, City Councilor and member of the UMass Board of Trustees Jose Delgado, and State Senators Adam Gomez and Jake Oliveira.
Mayor Sarno states, “Henry Thomas III is one of the City of Springfield’s most respected and durable civic voices. He and his family have been long-time advocates for improving access to education, including expanding UMass Amherst to our downtown Springfield which was part of Henry’s vision and has been realized thanks to his hard work. This is a fitting tribute and I was honored to join to celebrate Henry’s great work as the UMass Amherst Henry M. Thomas III Center was unveiled here downtown inside Tower Square. Congratulations Henry, and thank you for your belief, support, and investment in our Springfield and in the human spirit.”
