Mayor Sarno Congratulates New Fire Department Promotions, Including the First African-American District Fire Chief

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi today held a ceremony for the swearing in of three Fire Department promotions at the Raymond M. Sullivan Public Safety Complex in Springfield. 

 

Those promoted at the ceremony were Brian Ward to Lieutenant, Martin Burgos to Captain, and Tyrone Denson to District Fire Chief who also became the first African-American to be named to that position. 

 

Mayor Sarno states, “My congratulations and thanks to our brave and dedicated Fire Department personnel and their families.  On behalf of the residents of our great city, we thank you for your continued efforts in keeping our community safe and we truly appreciate your service to our Springfield.  I also wish to recognize our newly promoted District Fire Chief Tyrone Denson on becoming the first African-American to serve at this position.  This is a well-deserved and earned promotion and another milestone for our city’s history, our Fire Department and my administration.  Congratulations and Godspeed.”

 

Commissioner Calvi states, “First off, congratulations to Lieutenant Ward, Captain Burgos and District Chief Denson on their outstanding career and hard work with our Fire Department.  I also want to acknowledge District Chief Denson on this historic occasion of being the first African-American to be promoted to District Chief.  I am looking forward to working with him on behalf of our residents.  All of the promotees have a bright future with our Springfield Fire Department and I wish to congratulate all of them and their families.  Job well done.”
