Mayor Sarno Continues Neighborhood Enhancement Projects

Celebrating the Completion of the Marble Street Extension Project

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno held a press conference earlier today to celebrate the completion of the Ashmun Street, Dale Street, and Marble Street Roadway Improvement Project.  The $1.1 million transportation initiative’s intent was to aid traffic flow, ease traffic congestion and improve public safety in the area surrounding the newly constructed South End Community Center through the extension of Marble Street to Ashmun Street and realignment of Dale Street.

Mayor Sarno stated, “This continues my administration efforts to enhance all our neighborhoods – today it’s our South End neighborhood.  This roadway project coupled with the marked housing improvements and new ownership and management of Outing Park (old Hollywood Street) demolition of the old SHA apartment complexes, a renovated Emerson Wight Park, a brand new South End Community Center and a $10 million economic development investment by Balise Auto Sales has really redefined the South End for the better of our residents and business community.”

Chris Cignoli, Director of the Department of Public Works, added, “With the support of the Mayor and Leo Florian of the South End Citizens Council, the completion of the Marble Street Extension Roadway Project represents another step in the continued transformation of the South End Community.  The Marble Street Extension project opens up the neighborhood with greater access to housing, Emerson Wight Park and to the new South End Community Center.”

The Marble Street project is the first of three major roadway project to be completed with Disaster Recovery Funds provided to the City by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development following the tornado of 2011. The second project, Six Corners Roundabout, is under construction and will be completed in early 2020, while the Central Street reconstruction project will begin construction of early 2020.

The Ashmun Street, Dale Street and Marble Street Roadway Improvements Project is a transportation improvement project located in Springfield’s South End.  Work included full depth roadway construction, small sections of a pavement milling and overlay, construction of concrete sidewalks, wheelchair ramps, driveways, drainage improvement, granite curbing, landscape trees and pavement markings.  The cost of the engineering design associated with the project was $122,000.  Construction the project started in September of 2018 and concluded in August of 2019.
