Mayor Sarno Signs onto Mayors Against LGBTQ Discrimination Lawsuit

As a member of Mayors Against LGBTQ Discrimination, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno has signed onto an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in support of employment nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community. The brief is prepared by a coalition of local jurisdictions, including the City of Los Angeles and the County of Santa Clara, with the assistance of the Public Rights Project

Mayor Sarno stated, “A good person is a good person, no matter what gender, racial make-up, background or sexual orientation. Respecting this right can only make for a better and stronger community.”

This fall, the Supreme Court will consider how Title VII’s ban on workplace sex discrimination protects LGBTQ people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in a trio of cases: R.G.& G.R. Harris Funeral Homes Inc. v. EEOC & Aimee Stephens; Altitude Express Inc. v. Zarda; and Bostock v. Clayton County. The EEOC and many federal courts have recognized that anti-LGBTQ discrimination is a form of sex discrimination. The Court will now decide whether to revoke these non-discrimination protections.
