On the steps of The Amazing World of Dr.Seuss Museum, Kay Simpson, President of the Springfield Museums, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Superintendent Daniel Warwick and Sally Fuller of the Davis Foundation, celebrated the generosity of Springfield Public Schools children! The students orchestrated a successful coin collection to contribute towards the new museum, opening June 3. The celebration is the culmination of a multi-year effort by the school children to show their support of a fun, interactive, bilingual museum that focuses on Springfield native Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In 2013,first graders held a successful "Pennies for Seuss" campaign that was matched in funding by local businesses. This past march, students from pre-K to high school participated in a coin collection as a "Seuss in Springfield Community Project." Participants of the 2017 Seuss in Springfield Community Project included the following schools: Commerce, DeBerry,Central, Bowles, Dorman, Ells, Gerena, Homer, Pottenger, Sci-Tech, Springfield Conservatory of the Arts-High School, and South End Middle School. Participants in the 2013 The Pennies for Seuss Initiative included the first graders of the following schools: Balliet, Boland, Bowles, Brookings, DeBerry, Dorman, Gerena, Glenwood,Glickman, Indian Orchard, Rebecca Johnson, Kensington, Liberty,Lincoln,Memorial,Pottenger, Talmadge,Washington,and White Street.
