A Neutral Corner “Knocks-Out” Violence in Springfield

New local boxing program trains kids in the ring so they can succeed outside of it

On Wednesday, May 12, 2010 City of Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno along with former Golden Glover and Professional Boxer Pat Ireland introduced A Neutral Corner (ANC) Youth Boxing program as the latest in anti-violence initiatives. The inaugural class of A Neutral Corner was held on site in the Gymnasium at the Springfield South End Community Center at 29 Howard Street, Springfield.

A Neutral Corner is a hands-on, “Old School” boxing program designed to support Springfield middle and high school students. The program teaches discipline; fosters teamwork; and instills character, focus, and strategic-thinking, all of which are critical elements in supporting academic and personal successes.  The program promotes positive resolutions to conflict and contributes to violence prevention in the schools and community.  Community collaborators include, but are not limited to:  City of Springfield Violence Prevention Task Force, Springfield South End Community Center, and Springfield Public Schools.
