Mayor Sarno Meets with Police Executive Research Forum

Thursday, July 12, 2018

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno met with representatives of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) yesterday to discuss the work they are conducting on behalf of the City to review the Springfield Police Department’s Internal Investigation Unit’s (IIU) policies and practices. PERF representatives attending were Thomas J. Wilson, Director of the Center for Applied Research and Management; Meredith Mouser, Ph.D., Research Associate; and Christina Egan, Attorney at Law, McGuire Woods.

Police Commissioner John Barbieri recommended this review in 2016 as the Springfield Police Department strives to stay ahead of the curve by ensuring it meets and maintains best practices in all areas of law enforcement and public safety.

Mayor Sarno stated,“The Police Executive Research Forum will identify and make recommendations on where the department has room for improvement in its Internal Investigation Unit”.

Solicitor Ed Pikula and Chief of Staff Denise Jordan also participated in the meeting. Solicitor Pikula noted that “PERF will help the Police Department streamline its disciplinary reporting process and provide assistance as to developing the best means of tracking metrics of complaints involving misconduct and discipline that can be used by the Police Commissioner as an ‘early warning’ detection process for officers who may need assistance.”
