Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Chief Administrative and Financial Officer, Timothy J. Plant announce that D. Jeremy DeMar has been hired as the city’s new Director of Dispatch.
Mr. DeMar comes to the City of Springfield from Rochester, NY, where he has served as Public Safety Emergency Communications Supervisor for the Emergency Communications Department since 2011. In this capacity he oversaw the daily operation of a high volume unified public safety answering point, including the supervision of up to 30 telecommunicators and dispatchers per shift. Prior to this Mr. DeMar was employed as a dispatcher and communications training instructor for the City of Rochester and Monroe County. Additionally, he has served as a firefighter and EMT and also has experience in customer service.
Mayor Sarno stated, “First of all I’d like to thank former Director Melissa Nazzaro, who has now moved on to a state capacity. I’m glad to have Mr. DeMar on board. He brings top notch credentials to our city. The work that our director and 911 dispatchers do is ‘front line’ critical and deeply appreciated in enhancing our public safety response and attack.”
Plante stated, “I am thrilled to have someone of Mr. DeMar’s caliber and skill set to become our next Director of Dispatch. This is a critical position that the City will rely heavily on as the Dispatch Department continues to enhance the 9-1-1 systems and technology to better serve our residents and first responders.”

Mr. DeMar’s professional affiliations include the Department of Homeland Security’s First Responders Resource Group, NG9-1-1 Institute, National Emergency Number Association, National Joint TERT (Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce) Initiative, Association of Public Safety Communications Officials, and New York State 911 Coordinator’s Association.
Mr. DeMar has studied extensively in the field of emergency response. He holds the following degrees: M.A. in Strategic Security Studies – Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA; B.S. in Community and Human Services – Emergency Management from Empire State College – the State University of New York; and A.A.S. in Fire Protection Technology from Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY.
Mr. DeMar’s employment will be effective as of Monday, January 8, 2017 and he will be making $2,019.23 per week. Currently residing in Rochester, he has one year to move to Springfield to comply with the city’s residency requirement.
