Director of Business & Technology

SUMMARY:

The Director of the Springfield Police Department is responsible for assuming a leadership role in the development, maintenance and application of policies and procedures for crime and loss prevention, law enforcement, and safety and security services for the Springfield Police Department.  Supervises and evaluates staff members as directed by the Commissioner, recommending appropriate corrective action or commendation; manages direct reports.   Makes recommendations for the Springfield Police Department facilities, equipment, personnel and operations needs to the Commissioner.  Collaborates with the Commissioner to problem solve and resolve conflicts.

RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting with developing and managing the Public Safety department budgets, testing manpower utilization against budgeted man-hours base. 
  • Overseeing the Communications Operations and Records Management within the department.
  • Acting as the designate to the Commissioner in operational matters. 
  • Planing, organizing, and directing security activities; developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Participating in the integration of Department of Public Safety services into the broader community.
  • Assuring commitment and compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and department policies by all department members.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED include, but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of police administration and programs with the ability to assure enforcement of safety regulations, state law and department rules and policies.
  • Knowledge of Human Resource and budget management.
  • Knowledge of police terminology.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interpersonal/human relations skills.
  • Public and community relations skills with the ability to promote positive community service and relations with the entire community and assure that all department members do the same.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Planning/organizational skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-direction and motivation.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES) REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Law enforcement, Administration of justice, or related area preferred.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in a senior management position with responsibility for the direction of a public safety department preferred.
