Easter Rising: Springfield's Response to the 1916 Rising

This display will include two exhibit cases with photographs, a newspaper of the day, and memorabilia related to the Easter Rising and its impact in Springfield.  The display will also include several other newspaper headlines reproduced and enlarged in order to provide viewers with an understanding of the impact this important event had on the people of that time.  This exhibit will explore this seminal event, and examine the role Irish-Americans played in supporting the efforts of the Republicans.

Summer Enrichment Programs

Registration begins on Monday, May 2nd with each site having a specific day.  See the schedule in the chart below.

Registration will take place in Forest Park (Sumner Avenue entrance.  293 Sumner Ave. for GPS purposes.) at either the Recreation Office or Cyr Arena from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (OR UNTIL SITES ARE FILLED!).  Registrations CANNOT be accepted after 2:00 pm.

NOTE:  There is a $3.00 fee to enter the park for registration

Cost:  $50/Child for the first child and $25 for each additional sibling (CASH OR MONEY ORDERS ONLY!)

Ages:  6 - 13 (must be 6 by July 1 and not turn 14 before July 1)

EACH PROGRAM ACCEPTS 75 CHILDREN.  REGISTRATION IS ON FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS.

"On The Wilder Side"

If you are looking for a fun-filled out-of-the-ordinary experience, this adventure program is just right for you and promises to be EXTRA-ordinary!  There will be five, one-week sessions that include team building games and challenges, kayaking, fishing, swimming, treasure hunts, hiking, snorkeling, survival skills and out-of-the-box adventure!  This year’s lineup has a ropes challenge course to add even more excitement and challenges to your wilder experience! From beginner to expert level, you will learn new skills while exploring fun ways of helping each other AND our environment.  Come uncover the REAL you in this unique program of self esteem and competence building.

So c’mon…take a week on the wilder side…or take two!

Aquatics Programs

•Learn to Swim - The City of Springfield's Aquatics Department offers swimming lessons at a wide variety of levels. All Learn to Swim classes are available to participants ages three years and up. From getting your child comfortable in the water to perfecting your strokes, our program has everything needed to watch your child, or even yourself, grow into a strong and confident swimmer.

•Family Swim - The Family Swim program gives the entire family an opportunity to have fun, get in shape, get healthy, and spend time together in a safe environment. It can be an amazing thing to watch families bond while having fun!

•Aquaventure - An exciting new adventure awaits the participants of this program! A certified and licensed instructor will oversee the curriculum, which includes: kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving basics.

•Aqua-Zumba - A combination of dance and aerobics blend together for this latest trend in water fitness. This fast-paced fitness class provides participants with a fun and exciting way to stay in shape.

Afterschool Programs

Looking for a free afterschool program that provides a safe, fun-filled environment for your children with lots of opportunities for hands-on educational and recreational activities to support what they do during the school day? The Recreation Division of the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management (DPBRM) runs afterschool programs at five elementary schools located throughout the city and funded by the City of Springfield and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

Public skating

Public skating is offered at Cyr Arena in Forest Park on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. – 3:50 p.m. beginning on Friday, October 2.  There is a $5.00 admission fee ($3.00 for youth) and a $4.00 skate rental fee.  Birthday parties may be scheduled please call 787-6438 after 4:00 p.m. for booking and fee information.
