According to SHHS Director Helen Caulton Harris, “the H1N1 virus is still circulating in our community and causing illness and hospitalizations.” Influenza vaccination is the most effective method of preventing influenza and influenza-related complications. H1N1 is likely to continue causing disease deep into this winter season.  The vaccine is plentiful and readily available.  All Individuals and families should take advantage of this opportunity to protect themselves and prevent the spread of influenza to their close contacts.

Prevention strategies against all flu includes frequent hand washing, covering your mouth when sneezing and/or coughing, and not sharing items that you put into your mouth.

With the exception of children three and under, the clinic will serve ALL residents. Please wear short sleeve shirt and bring your insurance cards. To speed your progress at the clinic, access, complete and bring to clinic registration forms which can be found on-line at HHS website at http://www.springfield-ma.gov/hhs/health-news-and-events.html

April is Public Health Month

Each year we seek to honor a Public Health Luminary during our kick-off event. The person nominated should have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in the health and human service arena.  A community activist/advocate who has “pushed” the public health agenda.  A Springfield worker/resident who has raised our awareness about the health status indictors and who has worked to have public health  issues placed on the city’s work plan.
