June 10, 2015 –Springfield, MA– 34 Front Street in Indian Orchard was subject to two suspicious fires on December 30, 2010, http://goo.gl/sQ69Tf, and again on August 14, 2011, http://goo.gl/9PyODw, the latter completely destroyed the building. At the time of the fires the building was privately owned by Priority Investments, Inc. with an address listed on the deed as Longmeadow, MA.
After the second fire the building was so damaged the City had no other option but to do an emergency demolition of this large three story structure. In the months after the 2011 fire the City obtained a court order from the Western Division Housing Court ordering the owner to finish the remaining demolition and clean up the debris, but was unable to locate an actual current address for the owner. The Western Division Housing Court issued a capias (civil arrest warrant) for the owner and person apparently in charge of the property and attempted to enforce the capias several times unsuccessfully.
When the building’s owner failed to stay current on the property taxes the City was able to foreclose on the property for the non-payment of taxes. Recently the city secured bond funds to complete the demolition and cleanup of the property.
The demolition and removal of hazardous materials will cost $107,325.00. It is being completed by Associated Building Wreckers of Springfield, MA. Environmental Reporting and Monitoring is being completed by Cardno/ATC of West Springfield, MA. Crews will be on site Thursday for this announcement to begin work.
